Thanks for a great lesson today. I'm really, really impressed with how well your presentations are coming on, well done. I've seen some great work from you all.

Now, we need to move onto the last few stages to make sure that our filmsare as good as the presentations you have made so far.

Please make sure you do the following for next lesson:

Look at your presentation and write a script of what you want to say for every one of your slides. Bring this to your next lesson. Please add the subject line (oggetto) "3LSS PowerPoint." This will help me find it.
Send your presentation to me via email. You'll find my email address above if you don't know it already. Please send it before Wednesday 5.5.2010
If you have trouble with email (if your file is really big, use this website instead: https://www.yousendit.com/ You can send much bigger files using this website.
Find a song you want to include on your film. Creative commons is best. You can find free music here: http://www.jamendo.com/en/ (extra 0.5 marks for people who use creative commons music in their film and credit it!)

Visit to Malta

Dear All,

I hope you've had a great first few days in Malta? I especially hope that you're speaking lots of English and not just speaking Italian together! :D

I'd love to know a little bit about your trip on your blogs. Write a post on your blogs discussing several of the following points:

In what ways is Malta similar to Italy?

In what ways is it different?

What has surprised you about Malta?

What have you enjoyed most so far?

What are you looking forward to next?

What message do you have for the teachers back in Mezzolombardo?

Next,choose one or two of these more important points to include in your post.

My grandfather, who unfortunately I never met, was in Malta working with the Royal Air Force for the whole of the 2nd World War (WWII). What evidence can you see of the ex-British presence in Malta? Is there any evidence of the important role Malta played in WWII there? What other history is in evidence?

Malta, like Lampedusa, has often been in the news for the refugees that arrive there. Have you seen any evidence of the refugees and economic migrants' arrival in Malta?

You guys are social science students. Have you noticed any evidence of the social sciences at work in Malta? Have you noticed any need for social science type work to be done there?

There is a lot of money involved in the English language teachiing industry. How well do trips like yours help you to learn to speak English instead of just learning about it? Where do you learn more, in class in Mezzolombardo or in class in Malta, or walking around the streets and shops of Malta? Would you recommend a trip like this to next year's 3 LSS students for them to improve their English, or just for the fun of it?

Please write a post of 100 - 150 words to tell me about your trip and discuss these issues.

Presenting Our Surveys

Hi everyone, hope you're well?

This week we're going to watch four films which present survey results and write what you think about them. Please pay attention to the style of the film. How easy is it to understand the writing, how interesting is the film? Does the music go with the film or not?

Don't forget, You are going to make a similar film to present the survey that you made, so think about the style, content and presentation of these films as you watch them. What would you like to have in your presentation and what would you change?

Watch the presentations and take notes about what you like and what you don't like about them. Bring your notes to class next week!

Our Surveys

In II Martino Martini at Mezzolombardo we are studying Social Sciences in English.

Recently we have been doing some work on using the Likert Scale to do surveys of people's attitudes. We are using Google forms to publish our own individual surveys on our blogs. Each of our surveys is about a subject that for one reason or another is of personal importance to us.

Please Note: Our surveys are about some difficult social issues such as Alcohol, drug mis-use and so on. They may well not be suitable for younger students.

Catching Up

Dear All,

To give everyone a chance to catch up this week I'm not going to give you any extra homework. Please check that you are up to date with the task below as I am now marking our blogs (dare voti.)

1) Finish your post with a picture and a link that we started in class.

Search the internet (or your computer) for a photo that describes an area of Social Science that interests you.
Write a post explaining why this science interests you and why this photo is relevant.
Remember to credit where you found the photo.
Add any links that are relevant.

Check the blog rubric to help you write a good quality blog post. Photos and images yes, but also make sure you express your own opinion, you also show some insight, and your post is interesting to the audience (Me, Teri, Denise, Mr Petterlin and all the rest of the class.)

2) Write 2 or 3 comments on your friends and colleagues' posts. Make sure your comments are relevant to the post and engage the author (creating communication) Write a comment on my posts too where relevant :)

3) Reply to any comments on your own blog (very important.) Your replies should be written quickly.

4) Check that your other homework has been finished (Bloom's Taxonomy evaluation, Blogfest post, the questions for Blogfest. This is the last chance for these tasks!

Bloom's Taxonomy Homework

Dear All,

Thanks again for a good lesson yesterday. It was a bit un-planned, but because we couldn't get into the computer lab we had to make a quick change.

So, I'd like us all to continue thinking about Bloom's taxonomy, it is a subject we're going to come back to later in the year too.

Remember that Bloom talked about lower order and higher order thinking skills. Here is a list of the thinking skills in Bloom's revised taxonomy. I hope that today's task will give us an opportunity to use almost all of the skills.

Here is your homework task for this week:

So, first of all, what I would like us to do is a little bit of remembering and understanding. Please look again at the rubric for blogging tasks we look at in class. You can also download a copy here.
Read through the rubric. Look at all the different categories. Which one talks about relevance? Which one talks about links and images? Which one talks about grammar?
Now I'd like us to do some applying, analysing and evaluating. Please look at one or two posts from your blog (I think the Blogfest post would be a good idea.) Look at the rubric and think about what mark (voto) you would give your own posts. Look at a Blogfest post form one of your classmate's blogs. Again, evaluate your colleague's blog post and decide how well they would score using our rubric.
Now, the most interesting part for me as a teacher, the creating section of the homework. Please write a reflective blog post talking about your own blog, your colleagues blog and what you think about them so far. Talk about the parts you like of the blogs, then discuss the marks you would give them from the rubric. You should also offer some advice if there are any areas that need to improve.

I don't want to set a minimum length for you post. I would expect something about 100 words, but that is not mandatory. Remember, your posts will be given marks (voti) from the rubric, so check what you have written against the rubric.

Finally, please make sure you have replied to any comments where neccessary. I know that Denise and Teri have left comments on some of our blogs, and it's important that you reply (where relevant.) Also please check all your homework is up to date.

As always, contact me if you need help. I know that many of you have been working hard on your blogs. Keep up the good work - and - I will remember all your hard work at the Scrutinio ;-) !

As you may well remember, we are working with 2 student-teachers from Canada this year, Denise and Teri. Well, we haven't really done much with them yet this year as we were busy getting our blogs set up.Now it's time for that to change!

For homework this week we're going to get to know a little more about our Canadian colleagues Teri and Denise.

1) Denise has made a great short video on her blog where she talks about what she studies, what her hobbies are and what she likes to do in the summer.

Please visit Denise's blog and leave a comment on her video post that engages with her, and helps you to connect to her. Maybe you could talk about what your hobbies are, maybe you could talk about any hobbies that Denise has that you share, maybe you could ask Denise some questions about her hobbies, maybe you could talk about what you are studying, maybe you could talk about what job you'd like to do, maybe you can tell Denise about your blog, too..... you choose.

2) Teri has written a introductory blog post for3LSS where she asks us some questions about Blogfest, and tells us a little about herself. You can also find out more about Teri on her It's Me page.

Please read Teri's information about herself and the introduction for us, then leave her a comment on her 3 LSS page. Againg, your comment should engage with Teri, and helps you to connect to her. You can use the same idea we talked about above. e.g. maybe you could talk about what your hobbies are.... etc

Please do this before Sunday 8th November so that Teri and Denise have time to reply to us.

Marks, Tests and Coursework.

Dear All,

I'm glad to see you're all getting going with your blogs. I hope you're not having too many problems. Please leave a comment here, or send me an email if you need some help.

Don't forget there will be very few or no tests (prove scitte) this year in the CLIL / ICT classes. You will be given marks (voti) based on the project work we are doing and how much English you use in class. For this reason, it is very important that you don't miss any of the work we do. Here is a quick list to remind you:

1) Check that you have done all the jobs from last weeks homework.

2) Complete all of this week's class work. Here is a list to remind you.

Add your blog to the comments from last week's post.
This must use the HTML code we learnt in class e.g.

If you cannot remember how to write the html, look at our lesson PowerPoint slides below.
Write a comment to 5 of our classmates. Your comment should be more than just "hello" it should connect with your classmates and be relevant to their post. You can write your comment on either their introduction or their article about the blogfest.

Finally, I want to ask everyone to keep a register (registro) of all the blogging work you do. I will collect this when I am giving out marks (voti). For example AnnaT and Karin's register would look something like:

October 25th - Set Up Blog.
October 25th - Wrote Introduction on blog.
October 26th Wrote post about the BlogFest
November 2nd - Commented on Monica, Greta, Silvia, Veronica and Alberto's blogs
November 6th - Read Teri (In Canada's) blog and left a comment....

Welcome to the world of blogging! I hope your blogs are all doing well and you've not had too many problems setting them up?

There are two tasks for this week's homework. Please make sure these are ready for November 2nd. There is a penalty for late work!

1) Set up your blog. Give it a name, choose your colours (make sure you can read it easily), have fun!

2) Write your first post: "My blog - a new space for learning." This should be more than just a simple introduction to your blog. You should explain what you would like to write about, why you want to write about these things and what you hope to achieve with your blog this year. Please add the tag "introduction" to your post. N.B. You will need to edit your first post if you have already written it.

3) Add your second post about the trip to Blogfest. You should have already written this, so copy and paste it into your blog and publish it. Please add the tag "Blogfest" to your post.

4) Tell us your blog address. Reply to this post and tell us the address of your blog. Click on the "Comments" section below to reply

Welcome to the 3LSS Class blog!

For this blog, I hope we're all going to have a lot of fun working together. I hope that it will show you all a different way to learn and communicate and start to get you all used to creating content on the internet. I want to work together on many different blogging projects with the aim of helpin YOU GUYS to become more independant learners.
